Bear Ornament - CO6
Crafting my handmade copper ornaments involves a patina process that enhances their unique beauty. Each ornament begins as a copper sheet, cut and embossed with a mountain texture plate, imparting an intricate design. To achieve the desired patina effect, I apply liver of sulfur, which oxidizes the copper to a deep black hue. Next, I gently use steel wool to remove the patina from the raised areas, allowing the mountain pattern to stand out in stunning contrast. The final step involves sealing the ornament with wax, which not only secures the patina but also preserves the copper's luster. While this wax seal offers protection, it is not permanent, allowing the ornament to continue developing character over time as it interacts with various environments. This careful balance of technique and materials results in a piece that is both timeless and dynamic, reflecting its handcrafted origins.
